ABOUT.
mission
Being a medical school student is challenging. We face a difficult transition into medical school that may create stress, depression, and/or anxiety. The mission of this program is to develop well-being, resilience, community, and strategies within medical school students that limit these effects. All of our programs and short psychological interventions are evidence-based and have been proven to enact powerful and lasting changes from multiple randomized controlled trials. It is our hope that through these programs, we will support students with transitioning.
VISION
The vision for this program is to extend to medical schools across the United States. If you would like to start this program at your medical school, we have developed a Step by Step Program to implement these interventions at your school. Our goal is to make this program widely accessible, free, and customizeable to any medical school. Please contact PMW@ downstate.edu if you would like more information about this process.
EVIDENCE
Our program uses evidence-based programs that have been associated with developing resilience, creating community, and promoting psychological well-being. Why make this program evidence-based? The short answer: we want to know it works.

There have been over 200 randomized control trials promoting these types of effects. Over the course of the first year, medical school students will be given multiple, and short psychological interventions including:
-
Gratitude Interventions (Three Good Things/Gratitude Letters)
-
Expressive Writing to Heal (Expressive Writing about Trauma)
-
Best Personal Self (Imaging you at your best)
-
Mindfulness Meditation
MENTEES
Why focus on medical students? Because medical school students and physicians are in a crisis. We sometimes get thrown into positions or places that are stressful, overwhelming, and anxiety-provoking. To add on to that, we sometimes do not have the skills to limit these effects psychologically.
This program hopes to fight that. These effects can carry over to the way medical students interact with patients in the future as well as with colleagues whom they would work with to care for a patient. More importantly, the rates of suicide among medical school students is 14%, which is almost double the rate within the general population. By joining this organization, you are making a commitment to help fight against this statistic and provide the support the medical school need.
MENTORS
All our mentors are recruited among first year medical school students. Mentors are trained to become excellent leaders of wellness, mentors, and facilitators. Training includes the OSCAR mentorship method, how to refer for depression/anxiety/
stress, and learning effective ways to facilitate discussions. Our belief is that peer-peer interaction can enact powerful effects through developing camaraderie and community.

If you would like more information about ways to get involved, please email PMW@downstate.edu.
RESOURCES
We have created an extensive library of resources that are local and accessible to Downstate students.
If you need a referral to a certain resource, please contact your mentor and we will provide you with local resources.
However, if you want to talk to someone immediately or are in crisis, please feel free to contact the National Crisis Text Line, an anonymous texting counseling resource, or the Life Crisis Hotline.
meet the executive team.
Julia Fisher
Co Program Director
Julia is from New York City and went to Brown University, where she graduated from in 2020. One of Julia's favorite ways to maintain balance and wellness is through physical movement. At Brown, Julia taught 305 Fitness classes (dance fitness classes modeled after a Miami nightclub!) and hopes to bring that to Downstate at some point in the future. For now, she loves finding new parks and routes around the city for running. In her free time, Julia also loves to read, play games (big Catan fan), and of course watch some good TV (just another person who won't stop talking about succession).
Kiara Stanifer
Co Program Director
Kiara is from Stockton CA, and moved to NYC in 2020 when she began teaching middle school science with Teach For America. She did her undergraduate studies at UCLA, where serving as a Resident Assistant (R.A) helped her find her passion for community building, peer support, and wellness. Outside of school, she loves making short films, journaling, reading and dog walking. When she really has time on her hands, traveling is the move! Kiara hopes to help foster a supportive community while helping folks prioritize their emotional and physical wellbeing as they pursue their dreams in medical school.
Alana Kosches
Co Director of Mentor Care
Alana was born and raised in South Florida. She graduated from Northwestern University in 2021, where she studied neuroscience and psychology. Alana is excited to be a part of this year's executive board, where she can contribute to the goals of promoting mental, emotional and physical wellness. She hopes to create a supportive community that fosters a smooth transition into medical school for the incoming class. Alana loves to wakeboard, can knit a scarf, and is an avid Jeopardy fan!
William Cao
Director of Logistics
Will is a nontraditional student, a career-changer. He graduated from Brown University in 2014 with a degree in Economics and completed his premedical coursework at Columbia University's Postbac Premed Program for nontraditional students. Will worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and strongly believes that his experience there solidified his decision to pursue medicine as his life's work. During his downtime, he enjoys spending quality time with his family, especially with his recently born niece, Eloise. He also enjoys weightlifting and running and will be participating in the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon as part of MSK's Fred's Team, raising money in support of cancer research.
Jessica Richman
Director of Faculty Relations
Jessica is from Long Island and graduated from Cornell University in 2019. She feels very fortunate to be able to stay in New York State and continue her education here at SUNY Downstate.
"Medical school can be stressful, but I am glad I have found ways to maintain balance. I do this by cooking myself a healthy dinner to allow myself a break between the school day and studying again in the evening. I also try to squeeze in a quick workout most days of the week by doing a Pilates class on the Sculpt Society app. I prioritize taking time on the weekends to see my friends and family."
She loves food and enjoys cooking and baking new recipes in addition to exploring restaurants all over New York City. She is also an avid runner and ran the NYC Half Marathon last year. She hopes to one day train for a full marathon!
Steven Mcglinchey
Director of Special Projects
Steven is from Fishkill, NY. He graduated from Hofstra university in 2019. Steve believes that medical school can be stressful and busy but he believes that it is important not to lose sight of oneself.
"It is so important to make time for things that make you happy. I always leave Sundays for myself as a day to decompress and watch football. Staying active is another great way to stay well. Getting in the gym and releasing endorphins is an excellent way to boost mental health, and it's a nice break. Last but certainly not least, friends and family are so important. Making time to hang with friends (both in and out of school) is always a great way to unwind and remember there are other things out there!"
Whenever Steve is feeling overwhelmed, he loves heading to the basketball courts here at Downstate. "It's nice to get active and play pick-up with friends. Also, when the weather is nicer, heading to prospect park for a quick walk is a game changer. Nothing like a bit of sun and fresh air for a quick reset."
mENTOR.
what is a downstate mentor?
Each pair of mentors will be in charge of 12-14 students. We strive to make this program customized to the people we mentor. We will have a structured 6 sessions which use short and powerful interventions that develop resilience, decrease stress, and bolster one's mental health. Outside of these programs, our mentors strive to do one job. Support. This includes but is not limited to giving them academic tips, providing constructive mentorship, and listening to their mentees during stressful times.
how are mentors trained?
All mentors will receive training that falls into the three dimensions: mentorship, facilitation, and referral. Our goal is that these skills can translate within their future roles as physicians enabling one to become more sensitive colleagues within their future careers. Training will most likely take place at the beginning of next year. Also, we are aware of the time commitment that comes with medical school. Therefore, all our training will not conflict with any academic events.
what is the time commitment?
We are aware of the time constraits of our mentors. Therefore, we have shortened the time commitment to what we think would be the most effective. That means only 6-8 hours of required events between August and February. Mentors are also required to reach out to their mentees twice a month as well as meet with them one-on-one.
